Call Law Enforcement After Every Accident

You’re at a stop sign and somebody bumps you.  You get out. You look at the damage to the vehicle and it looks to be minor. The other party’s vehicle looks like it has minor damage as well. The other party suggests you do not call law enforcement.  “Don’t get insurance companies involved.  We can handle this ourselves.  Let’s just exchange information.”  Sounds like the right thing to do.  But it’s not.  I can tell you countless stories where people have handled the matter this way and paid for it later.

It even happened to my own daughter in Tallahassee at college when another young lady hit her, pretended to write down information and gave it to her to later find out that there was no information on the sheet and my daughter had no one to claim her property damage from except herself. Don’t let this happen to you. Always call in law enforcement no matter how minor the accident looks. They’re going to keep people honest and they’re going to get accurate information at the scene.

Secondly, always involve your insurance company.  At least, notify them of the accident.  Whether you make a claim thereafter is up to you but at least they’re on notice of it and if needed, they’ll provide coverage later.  You don’t know the extent of your injuries or the damage at the time of the accident.  So always follow these steps.
