Do You Need Personal Watercraft and Boat Insurance?

Do You Need Personal Watercraft and Boat Insurance?

In 2017 (the most recent year available), the Coast Guard reported 4,291 accidents that involved 658 deaths, 2,629 injuries and approximately $46 million dollars of damage to property as a result of
recreational boating accidents.

As a personal injury lawyer in New Port Richey, Florida, its my recommendation that you carry watercraft coverage as you can’t assume that your homeowners insurance policy will cover you fully when operating a boat or personal watercraft like a Wave Runner. It’s best to purchase a separate insurance policy specifically for your watercraft needs.

Many of the coverage options for watercraft are similar to the coverage options for automobile insurance.

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage provides coverage for an accident in which you are alleged to have caused injury to another person while operating your watercraft.
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage protects you against claims for property damage you allegedly caused to someone else’s vessel while operating your vessel.
  • Medical Payments Coverage pays for the cost of medical care for injuries occurring as a result of the use of your boat or personal watercraft regardless of fault. This coverage will even cover medical expenses for injuries suffered by you and your passengers while skiing or wakeboarding.
  • Comprehensive Coverage pays for damages to your watercraft due to a loss as a result of incidents such as theft or fire. You will typically have a deductible with this type of coverage. Fault is not a factor with this coverage either.
  • Collision Coverage pays for damages to your watercraft arising from a collision regardless of fault and will likely be subject to a deductible.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Boater Coverage provides protection to you and your passengers for injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured boater while you are using your vessel.

You can also purchase coverage that will compensate you for personal items or fishing equipment which are lost or damaged during use of your vessel.

Additionally, specific coverage is available for purchase that will protect you against liability for fuel spills, or water sports injuries.

We highly recommend that you speak to a knowledgeable insurance agent who can assist you in purchasing watercraft insurance that will protect you and your loved ones and is the right fit for you.
